Français 4: For the three of you who were absent today:
FIRST: Log out of ANY gmail/google account you have, and then log IN to to your PHS gmail account, so that you can see this video:
Then, go to this video (10 minutes)
You may recognize it, because we watched just a few minutes of it in class, but now you need to watch the whole thing, doing these tasks:
• Notice how the big seated figure of Jesus, in the oval in the center of the space above the doors, is seated... his legs are wide apart, bent at the knees. They were trying to show that he was seated, but didn't know how to show that properly. Here's info to remember for a test: In this earlier style of church, the Romanesque (or le style roman, in French), there is ALWAYS a seated Jesus figure, in an oval, in this half-circle area above the front doors (this area is called the tympanum , and the oval area is called the mandorla ).
• The sculptures in the tympanum of this church (it is in Autun, France), are depicting "The Last Judgement"... the bible tells us that this is what happens to a person's soul when they die... they are judged by God (or Christ) to decide if they were good or bad while on earth... bad ones will be sent to Hell, and good ones sent to Heaven. Usually, on Romanesque churches, all of the sculptures tell stories that are meant to scare you into being a good person, to make you afraid of Hell. On Gothic churches, the sculptures are meant to be beautiful, to show you how beautiful Heaven will be, so that you want to be good, so you end up in Heaven.
DURING THIS VIDEO (write these down, to show me, Thursday.... Aeeda, EMAIL this to me BEFORE Thursday):
• How would you describe the overall look of the beings that are part of this carving? (ex: tall and skinny? squat and fat? scary? serene? very natural looking? etc.)
• What is happening on the left side of Jesus, and what is happening on the right side of Jesus?
• Take a screen shot of one of the angels.
• Take a screen shot of one of the demons.
• Tell whether the souls going to heaven are dressed, or naked
• Take a screen shot of the pair of big clawed hands, pulling at the head of one of the damned souls
• Write the name of the carver of the stone (starts with a G....) [they mention this and discuss it, in the later part of the video]
• Write the Latin words that he wrote on the lintel (the long space under the tympanum), and what they mean,
• Take at least 4 screen shots of carvings in this area, and tell what the video says that they are about (just do your best).
