vendredi soir

11/17/2017

Français 1: Finish the worksheet (right side--except for questions) with adverbs.
Français 3: Study for TEST Monday (see Tuesday's post for more details).
Français 4: Activity at the top of the worksheet... don't forget to show me (on Monday) your study videos that had been due today! You should be studying the QUIZLETS for the sculptures AND the new vocabulary EVERY DAY.

mardi soir

11/14/2017

Français 1: Write sentences for the left side column of our worksheet, handed out today in class (except for numbers 4, 9, &11).  IF YOU ARE IN ISS or ON SUSPENSION: I'm attaching the worksheet ("er_vbs_advfrwksht.pdf"), and also book page 100 which has the new notes (adverbs).

Français 3: TWO TESTS:
Friday (Nov. 17): Writing sentences in French, using either the imparfait or the passé composé. YOU will have to choose which tense is needed. You must also know how to correctly FORM the tenses. You will have to have the endings and the formation memorized, as well as the rules.
WORD BANKS will be given (only for Friday's test) for:
• the irregular imparfait stems (only in French, no translation)
• the irregular past participles (only in French, no translation)
• the special expressions (jusqu'à, tout le temps, etc. -- only there in French, you need to know what they mean, and which tense they go with)

You must know how the imparfait TRANSLATES vs how the passé composé translates, and how to form each tense, and when to use each tense. You will also be expected to know the special translations for être, avoir, savoir, connaître.

MONDAY:
Imparfait stems: Memorize to produce in French. I will not even give you an infinitive in French. I will give you an English prompt, like, "was reading", and you will give me: lis ___
LAUREN and Annie!!: I've attached a set of practice sentences that we worked on in class. You need to do them all.... this will take you at LEAST 30 minutes. This is practice for the test!

Français 4: Read the notes on the worksheet I handed out, about how to form the participe présent (you take the present-tense "nous" form of a verb, drop off the -ons, and add -ant instead). For irregular verbs, you use the same stem that you used for the imparfait (choisir--> choisiss___ ; aller--> all__, etc.).

We FIRST (during the recipe unit), learned to translate this as "....ing"... and, if it had "en" with it, you translated that as "WHILE": en écoutant = while listening; en fouettant= while beating/whisking). NOW... we are adding somethingnew: sometimes that "en" is translated as, "By..." (to give the method BY which you did something). So: "J'apprends le français en regardant souvent des films français." = "I learn French BY WATCHING French films often."

HOMEWORK: Activity 5: Say that the person given (in the example, it's Christine) DOES (present tense) the first action (conjugate it in the present tense!) BY ______ ing (so, take the infinitive verb in the parentheses, and change it to the present participle, adding "en" in front of it. TRANSLATE the whole sentence, translating the "en____ing" as "By  ..... ing".  (NOTE: The example is actually done in the bubble.) You only have to write one sentence.... just telling about the person whose name is given. You do NOT have to add a sentence about yourself, even though there is one in the bubble's example.)

Français 1: Make sure that you have up to and including 25 sets done of the project we started on Friday (if you are absent for illness, ISS, or suspension-- same assignment).
Français 3: 2nd Hr: Please go to this link, and do a video of yourself doing at least 10 of these, using the WRITE activity, producing in French. ; 5th Hr: (check back) NOTE TO ALL: a dû = had to.
Français 4: If you missed class today: I have attached a worksheet, below (passiveactiveexmapleswksht.pdf) . This practices the new notes that we just learned in the last class, about passive voice, vs. active voice. Here is a simple synopsis:
ACTIVE: "T.J. sifted the flour." <-- The person performing the action is mentioned first, and the action is conjugated for him (T.J. sifted). The flour received the action.
PASSIVE: "The flour was sifted before the cornmeal." <-- The item that RECEIVED the action (the flour) is mentioned first... followed by some form of être [in any tense]... followed by the action done to it. That action will be presented with a past participle adjective (=sifted).
Assignment: Do the first four sentences ONLY (on the attached worksheet.) Translate the sentence, AND decide if it is in the passive voice or the active voice. Circle A or P, accordingly.
